Educational Reflection | Every Voice Has Its Own Unique Value
I once had an adult male student who sang 「The Stolen Years」 during his first lesson. At that time, his voice was extremely tense. He had a habit of forcing his high notes upward, and whenever he reached the higher parts of the song, his voice would begin to crack.
After conducting a vocal range assessment, I told him:
“Your natural voice type is that of a Bass. You possess a rich, deep, and slightly textured tone. This is not a weakness — it is your unique characteristic.”
Many people believe that the higher the notes someone can sing, the more impressive the singer is. In reality, that is not true.
Every person’s voice has its own natural qualities. Some singers have bright, soaring high notes, while others have warm and powerful low registers. A true Bass voice is relatively rare in popular music. Therefore, when this type of voice discovers the right style and direction, it often becomes more distinctive and memorable.
Based on his vocal characteristics, I suggested that he explore a more powerful, rock-oriented style rather than continuously pursuing only lyrical songs. To my surprise, he understood immediately and took the initiative to do extensive practice and research after class. Within just a few lessons, he not only expanded his usable vocal range but also began developing his own unique singing style. His overall improvement was remarkable.
Many people misunderstand rock singing as simply “shouting loudly”. However, authentic rock vocal technique is not about shouting. It is about building power on a foundation of correct vocal production, using techniques such as powerful belting and chest mix to combine strength, control, and emotional expression.
Of course, this approach is not suitable for every Bass singer.
I have also encountered another type of Bass voice where attempting even slightly higher notes would immediately result in vocal breaks, leaving the singer with very limited song choices. Students with this type of voice require a different training approach rather than being forced to chase higher notes.
I continue to study and explore vocal techniques because I hope to help more students with different vocal characteristics discover the most suitable way to use their voices and find the musical style that truly represents them.
Because I have always believed that —
Singing is not about training everyone to sound the same; it is about helping every individual discover their own unique voice.
